What we keep, and why.

This is the website of Mort Subite, the Belgian beer bar at 308 Congress Ave, Austin. Here is what it keeps about you, in plain words.

The short version

  • We keep what you give us in a form, to do what you asked. If you join Mort members, we also keep your membership: your visits, the beers on tabs you put your member code on, what you tell Bobo, your answers to his questions, your birthday and friend links if you add them, and your chats with him if you save them.
  • Bobo’s replies are written by an AI model run by Anthropic, so your chat messages go to Anthropic. If you are signed in, so does a summary of your membership, so he can recommend for you.
  • We never sell your details, and this site never asks for a card number.
  • See, download or delete all of it from your membership page, or email adam@mortsubite.com.

What we collect, and why

Private event requests
Your name, email, the date, a headcount, the space and any notes. So Adam can reply about your event.
Speaker pitches for Curiosity on Tap
Your name, email, a phone number if you give one, the talk you pitch, what you tell us about yourself, any link you add and anything else you write. So we can consider your talk and reply about it.
The Dispatch
Your email address. To send the newsletter once it starts. Nothing else is sent to it.
Questions for the bar
Your name, an email or phone number, and the question. So someone can answer you.
Mort members
Your name, your member code, how you sign in (an email address or phone number you proved with a link or a code, or the id Google gives this site for your account, with the email it showed), that you are 21 or older, when you agreed to the member terms and which version, and your two choices: The Dispatch, and saving chats. So you can sign in, and the bartender can find you and count your visits.
Your date of birth
Checked when you join. We never keep the year: we keep that you are 21 or over and when we checked, and the month and day only if you ask us to keep your birthday (below). The member program is for guests 21 and over.
Signed-in browsers
The kind of browser and device (such as "Safari on iPhone"), how you signed in, and when. A session lasts 180 days and renews while you use it. Sign-in codes are kept scrambled and deleted after a day. To keep you signed in, and so you can see and sign out every browser from your membership page.
Visits and rewards
The nights your visit was counted, by a bartender or from a tab with your member code, the free draft ales you earned, and when each was poured. To run the member program. Every 10 visits earns you a free draft ale.
Beers on your tabs
When your member code is typed onto your tab at the bar, we read that tab from the bar’s register (Toast): each beer on it, how many, and when it was ordered, and when the tab opened and closed. Never food, prices, your card or the payment. A tab that is not yours can be marked “not mine” on your membership page. So your visit counts, Bobo can recommend from what you drink, and the bar knows what its members like.
What you tell Bobo
Short notes Bobo saves when you tell him about your taste, such as “loved the Orval”. You see each one as he saves it. So he can pick for you next time.
Your birthday, if you choose
The month and day, never the year, only if you tick the box when you join, add it on your membership page or pick it in the small form Bobo shows, and when you agreed. It goes straight to our database, not through the AI model. So the bar knows it. Only you and the bar’s staff see it. It is never shared with your friends or anyone else, and never tied to a drink or an offer. On the day itself, Bobo is told it is your birthday so he can say so.
Answers to Bobo’s questions
Now and then Bobo asks one optional question, such as the styles you reach for, a beer you want to try or how you found us. We keep your answer, or that you said no thanks, and when. So he can pick better for you and the bar knows its members. Only you and the bar’s staff see them.
Friend links
If you make or accept an invite link: who you are linked with, who invited whom, and when. Invite links are kept scrambled, run out after 14 days and are deleted a month after that; we do not keep who used one. A linked friend sees only your first name. So you can see each other on your membership pages, and Bobo can suggest you come in together.
The friend-link perk
The code for a Mort Subite t-shirt, earned with your first friend link once a visit of yours has been counted, and when it was earned and handed over. So it is handed over once.
Saved chats
If you leave saving on: your chats with Bobo, with phone numbers and email addresses taken out before they are saved. Deleted after 12 months. So a chat started on one phone carries on on another. Turn it off on your membership page.
Prize codes
The game, the member it was won by, when it was won and handed over, a scrambled copy of your browser’s random device id, and a scrambled code for your internet connection that night (not your IP address). So a code works once, and prizes stay at one per member and per device every 7 days and 2 per connection a night.

Every form also records the sentence you agreed to next to it, and when.

Bobo, and Anthropic

Bobo, the house bot, writes his replies with Claude, an AI model run by Anthropic. To write a reply, our server sends Anthropic the recent messages of your conversation and what Bobo needs to answer, such as the draft menu. Anthropic handles them under its own privacy policy.

If you are signed in as a member, each request also carries a short summary of your membership: your first name, your visit count, the beers on your tabs, what you told Bobo, your answers to his questions, your habits (the nights you usually come, the styles you lean to), the first names of friends you linked, and, on the day only, that it is your birthday. Bobo is told to use it to recommend, and never to tell you how much or how often you drink. The summary never includes how many drinks were on a tab, your birthday’s date, or anything about your friends beyond their first names.

If you are signed in and leave chat saving on, your chats are saved to your membership, with phone numbers and email addresses taken out first, and deleted after 12 months. Otherwise the bar stores no chat transcript: the conversation stays in your browser. We count how many replies Bobo writes each night and how much of the model they use, and how much each connection uses that night, filed under the same nightly scrambled code as the prizes, so one person cannot use up Bobo for everyone. While you play Bobo’s games, the server remembers where the game stands, such as which quiz question it asked and your streak, filed under a scrambled copy of the chat’s random id.

Joining, signing in and the request forms happen on the bar’s own pages and forms, not through the AI model. Anything you type into the chat itself does go to Anthropic, so keep phone numbers and email addresses out of it.

What your browser keeps

  • Your conversation with Bobo, so it is still there when you come back. Signing out removes it from this device.
  • A random device id, made up by your browser and not tied to your name, so game prizes can be limited per device.
  • While you send a speaker pitch for Curiosity on Tap, that tab keeps a copy of the form so a failed send does not lose what you wrote. It is cleared once the pitch is saved, or when you close the tab.
  • If you sign in, a session cookie, so you stay signed in. We keep only a scrambled copy of it. While you sign in, short-lived cookies hold the step you are on, for up to half an hour.

Clearing this site’s data in your browser removes all of these. The site uses no advertising or analytics trackers. Its fonts come from Google Fonts, so your browser asks Google for them.

Who sees it

Bar staff, on a password-protected staff page: they look members up by member code, name, phone or email to count visits and pour rewards, and they see the beers on your tabs and your habits, including the average number of drinks on your linked tabs, your birthday if you keep one, your answers to Bobo’s questions, how many friend links you have (not who), and your perk code. Staff do not see your chats with Bobo. A friend you link sees your first name and nothing else. They read requests to answer them, and requests may also be emailed to Adam at the bar.

The services the site runs on see what they need to do their part: Cloudflare hosts the pages and the database and, like any web host, sees your IP address; Google, if you sign in with it, tells us the id of your account, your name and your email, and never your password or anything else in the account; Twilio sends text codes, so it sees your phone number; the email service that sends sign-in links sees your email address; Anthropic writes Bobo’s replies (above); and Toast, the bar’s register, holds your tabs as it always has. We use your IP address for a moment to slow down abuse and do not keep it in our database. For prizes, sign-in codes and Bobo’s nightly allowance we keep only a scrambled code made from it with a secret key and that night’s date: it cannot be turned back into your address, and it changes every night.

We do not sell, rent or trade your details. When The Dispatch starts, it may be sent through a newsletter service, and this page will name it before it does.

Deleting it

On your membership page you can delete any note Bobo saved, any answer to his questions, your birthday, any friend link, any chat or all of them, mark a tab as not yours, download everything we hold about you, or delete your membership, which deletes all of it at once. Saved chats go by themselves after 12months, and sign-in codes after a day. For anything else, such as a request you sent, email adam@mortsubite.com with your name and the phone number or email you used, and we will delete it and tell you when it is done.

21 and over, and no cards

The member program is for guests 21 and over. We check your date of birth when you join, keep that you are 21 or over (and never the year), and do not knowingly collect details from anyone younger. This site never asks for a card number and never stores one: you pay at the bar.
